The British Tinnitus Association launch first “Easy Read” materials for people with tinnitus

The British Tinnitus Association (BTA) is pleased to announce the publication of the four BTA information leaflets in Easy Read format with the aid of a grant from Big Lottery Awards for All scheme.

This format of simple text and line drawings has been specially devised to help people with learning disabilities access the information they need to manage their tinnitus. Nearly 1 million people in England alone have a learning disability. The prevalence of hearing loss in people with learning disabilities is up to 40% and this often goes un- or mis-diagnosed. Hearing loss is the biggest causal factor in tinnitus. Up to 80% of people with tinnitus have a hearing loss.

Nic Wray, Communications Manager at the British Tinnitus Association, who led the Easy Read project: “Tinnitus can be a difficult condition to understand and deal with. People hear strange noises in their head that no-one else can hear and yet if you have a learning disability, you might really struggle to articulate the problem. Whilst planning this project, we received a call to our helpline from a support worker for a person with a learning disability. She told us their client’s GP believed they had a mental illness, not tinnitus! That really brought home to us the need for materials accessible to people with learning disabilities.”

She adds: “We hope that these new leaflets will remove the disadvantage that people with learning disabilities have had because of the lack of information previously

available, and will mean that they are able understand and cope better with their tinnitus, enabling them to improve their quality of life.”

The information leaflets in the series are:

• All about tinnitus

• Hearing aids and tinnitus

• Self help for tinnitus

• Tinnitus services

These leaflets are available free of charge from the BTA and can be ordered by contacting them on 0114 250 9933 or info@tinnitus.org.uk
